I am here in Los Angeles enjoying the sites, life and ambience and so far it has not disappointed. I have of course done the ‘touristy’ tours and made it to the beach in Santa Monica which was beautiful. I have met some very interesting people but today has been the pinnacle of my trip so far. I had a very long lunch with some entrepreneurs which was great. The energy entrepreneurs often have is so inspirational and infectious, I love to hear their ideas and I learn so much and it also gives me a chance to showcase my business too!
After the lunch I decided to take a walk and I saw some closed roads and heard some loud music. Being as nosey as I am, I decided to check it out and I stumbled upon a New Year Race which consisted of locals running a 5k to celebrate the new year. I stood in the cold with the other supporters and watched as they all took off – the front runners being the most serious started their watches and set off at an ambitious pace…..then lagging behind were the ‘others’, those of all sizes, attire, ages, some with dogs, some with pushchairs, a very eclectic bunch….I cheered them on as they set off then waited for them to come back around to finish.
As I was watching the ‘back runners’ I realised how humbling watching this sight was….. Seeing the faces full of determination to get to that finish line, some were just wanting to finish, some had a time goal in mind. If I could have bottled the determination and sold it, I would be a millionaire. Every one of those runners had a story which added to the determination. There was also incredible pride on their faces as they passed over the finish line (also some tears of disbelief and amazement that they made it without the need of a defibrillator or paramedic). 5k may not seem a lot to some people – especially those marathon runners – but for some the prospect of running that far is daunting and fearful – it can take a lot for someone to say yes then even more courage to show up.
So, whilst thinking of the race goers – what is your story and how does it affect you? Does it make you more determined to reach a goal or do they keep you stuck?
How do you show up in life? Are you living true to you?
